Spotlight on - Kvadrat, Sustainable Textile Designers

‘Spotlight’ is a new series we here at Semper will be bringing out every month. It will highlight brands, designers, architects who value sustainability and taking care of our planet in their work as much as we do. For our inaugural post we will be shining the Spotlight on one of our long-term loves, textile designers Kvadrat.

Kvadrat is a Danish textile company that was established in 1968 and has deep roots in the Scandinavian design sensibility. They produce, high quality, contemporary textiles and textile related products for architects and designers across the world. Their products have been used in countless projects across all of the design sectors including the residential, hospitality, education, commercial retail, cultural industries. At Semper, we love Kvadrat the for their sustainable approach to contemporary textiles. Their work proves you can create a beautiful and sustainable home, business and life for yourself.

Kvadrat dedicate themselves to minimising any environmental impact they have, and this forms the core of their design principles. Despite this, they still produce textiles of the highest quality, which we love. One of our favourite textiles of theirs is the Patio outdoor upholstery textile. Not only does it have great UV stability and a water repellent coating, it was designed over three intensive years to make sure it had the minimum possible impact on the environment.

At Semper, we love Kvadrat’s products and philosophy equally! Our ethos is to create beautiful spaces in the most sustainable manner, and anywhere we can we use Kvadrat products. If there is anything we can assist you with, feel free to get in touch and we will happily get back to you.

Their Sustainability Approach

Here at Kvadrat we are dedicated to minimising our environmental impact. It has been a core part of our design philosophy, as well as our day-to-day culture, since our company's founding in 1968. Today, we focus on our making, our local and global initiatives and the afterlife of our products in order to achieve a comprehensive sustainable approach.

At Kvadrat, a responsible approach to our production and our processes is part of our corporate and design philosophy. Ever since our company was founded in 1968, we have had a strong focus on minimising our environmental impact throughout all processes from design to delivery, while ensuring a healthy working environment.

As our sustainability commitments show, we aim to strike an optimal balance between environmental concerns, strict quality standards and social responsibility. For this reason, we prioritise sustainable products, evaluate the environmental impact of the textiles and ensure all our suppliers follow our stringent Code of Conduct.

Patio, an outdoor upholstery textile, offers a groundbreaking environmentally-focused profile and excellent functional properties. The product of three years’ intensive development, it is crafted using a specially-developed Trevira CS yarn with enhanced UV stability, and a water-repellent coating based on fat-modified compounds.

Thinking Circular

As our sustainability commitments show, we aim to strike an optimal balance between environmental concerns, strict quality standards and social responsibility. For this reason, we prioritise sustainable products, evaluate the environmental impact of the textiles and ensure all our suppliers follow our stringent Code of Conduct. Focused on the consistent development of new, sustainable products, we seek to instil circular thinking into every aspect of our operations. This starts with considering ‘waste’ as a valuable resource and extends to conception, sourcing, design, production, use and re-use. Durability is another key criterion for us: the longer our products are utilised, the better for the environment, as we respect the resources available to us.

‘Respect for nature has always coloured how we do things at Kvadrat. So has curiosity and enthusiasm for the innovation that follows it. Today, with the need to reconsider the way we design, produce and consume more pressing than ever, we are building on these values to push the boundaries of sustainable textile design’. – Kvadrat

Our products reflect our commitment to colour, quality, simplicity and innovation. We consistently push the aesthetic, technological and functional properties of textiles. In doing so, we collaborate with leading designers, architects and artists including: Miriam Bäckström, Raf Simons, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, Thomas Demand, Olafur Eliasson, Alfredo Häberli, Akira Minagawa, Peter Saville, Roman Signer, Doshi Levien and Patricia Urquiola.
