If you read this journal regularly you will know the sustainability approach at Semper Interiors is to use local designers, suppliers and trades in every feasible situation. Buying local furniture and materials eliminates a lot of transportation time, which in turn cuts down on the carbon emissions and footprint of a product. I love to specify local designers and suppliers because their products are bespoke, there’s a story and their process is usually a lot more transparent. For this week’s journal, I wanted to share some of my favourite furniture designers in Sydney.
1. Totem Road
Totem Road is a sustainable furniture company in Paddington, Sydney. They are ‘dedicated to bringing you on-trend, timeless pieces without any hidden costs to the environment’. They have a wide range of bespoke furniture for the bedroom, living room and dining room.
Much like Semper Interiors their vision is to create furniture that rebels against the ‘modern throwaway culture’ and designing objects that can be kept forever. Their solid oak furniture is influenced by mid-century and Scandinavian design and have an overall relaxed feel.
Their furniture is taken from conception to manufacturing with ‘care and a deep respect for natural resources and communities’. They only use responsibly sourced materials and do not compromise on quality. They have a transparent chain of custody, meaning when you buy their products you can source it back to the materials origin. You can check out their full sustainability statement here.
My personal favourite piece is their Wynter Dining Table, check it out below!
2. Tom Fereday
Tom Fereday is an award-winning furniture designer based in Camperdown, Sydney. His approach to is create honest design that is true to its materials and the process. Tom Fereday designs some truly bespoke lighting and furniture pieces.
Tom Fereday was born in Australia and grew up in England where he studied at Wimbledon School of Art. Following that he moved to Sydney to complete an honours in Industrial Design at UTS.
Their methodology is to create pieces based on the principle of ‘honest design, conveying a design process which celebrates the materials and manufacture behind furniture and products.’ Tom Fereday strives to create products which are of the highest quality, and enduring designs that are significant to their owner and their environment
It was hard to pick a favourite piece, however, I couldn’t get past the Mito Light.
This is not the first time I have mentioned DesignByThem in the Semper Journal, and to be honest it might not be the last! I love everything they do and everything they are about, they design and create locally produced environmentally friendly furniture. They even have a collection, Confetti Collection, which is made from recycled post-consumer and factory waste plastic.
I could go on forever about all of the reasons I love DesignByThem, however, the biggest pro for me (aside from the aesthetic) is all of their pieces can be recycled at the end of their life!
Mr and Mrs White are furniture designers and manufactures on the Northern Beaches of Sydney. Their style is strongly influenced by their desire to live life simply and their aesthetic completely captures the sophisticated and coastal style of Sydney. Their designers ‘are modest, using materials that are natural, long lasting and that get better with ages. They represent our family values of quality, honesty and simplicity…’
My favourite piece of theirs is the Double Barrel Table – absolute heaven!
The Wood Room is a bespoke Furniture Company based on the Northern Beaches of Sydney. Founded in 2012 by Simon and Katie, their furniture is’ synonymous with timeless design and adaptability.’ All of their furniture is handcrafted and Australian made, their collection includes so gorgeous tables, chairs, stools, benches, sofas, outdoors, lighting, and homewares. They also offer custom design!
They tailor all of their pieces to their customers needs to ensure it is a perfect fit for the customers life. The Wood Room includes their customers in their design process so they can buy pieces which will last a life time. Their motto is “Designed by you, made by us”.
About Amelia //
Hi there! My name is Amelia, I am the creative director and owner of Semper Interiors. I created Semper Interiors after working in hospitality studios for many years, during that time I found myself feeling increasingly guilty about the waste created throughout each project. I wanted to be able to design and create spaces that have a minimal impact on our beautiful earth. My approach to sustainability is based around ensuring my projects have longevity in both quality and aesthetic, supporting local trades, artisans and suppliers and using natural materials.
Semper Interiors a bespoke interior design studio based in New Farm Brisbane that focuses on sustainability and conscious construction practices.
